Child and Family Centre

Barnardos, Child and Family Centre, Tivoli, Dun Laoghaire is one of over 40 projects nationwide supported by the national child agency Barnardos to work in disadvantaged communities with children and families whose well-being is under threat. Some of the various centres have a different focus such as teenage parenting, children with special needs and in the case of the Barnardos project in Tivoli a significant aspect of the work is with children where there is parental substance misuse; it works through National Drug Strategy, 2009-16, Actions 41,  28,  29 and 30

The project works directly with children, young people and parents both in the provision of family support and direct therapeutic interventions. The services provided include one-to-one parental support, advice and guidance (including home-based support), parent groups, individual targeted support to children, and friendship support and after-school groups for children. In these various services the impact of parental substance misuse is explored in an on-going, supportive manner.  The Task Force funding supports the project as follows:

  • the provision of a food/meals support programme for the various children’s groups attending the service
  • encouraging parents who are affected by substance misuse to attend breakfast groups, and to participate in other activities.
  • through family menu planning and budgeting it contributes to developing family routines and structure around mealtimes and the development of parental capacities and related social and self-care skills; the social dimension is particularly important as many parents have limited access to other parents and feel unwelcomed in local coffee shops and cafes.

On a daily basis the project engages with 26 children across early years, pre-school and after school groups and in addition 18 parents/carers attend the breakfast group and 14 parents regularly attend follow-up group programmes dealing with stress management, money management and creative and cheerful use of recreation time with children. Over half the parents regularly accessed one-to-one support usually as a result of their participation.  Total involved = 26 children and their 18 parents/carers = 44.
