Update on drug-related deaths

Acording to new figures released by the HRB the number of drug-related deaths in Ireland during 2012 decreased slightly from 645 in 2011 to 633. Deaths from poisoning  were 350, while non-poisoning deraths were 283 among drug users. Almost 5,300 persons have now died since these records commenced in 2004. It is clear from the data that alcohol and poly drug use are highly implicated in poisoning deaths. Further information

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US reported on its examination of alcohol poisoning deaths, 2012-12. On average six persons, mostly adult men, die each day in the US from alcohol poisoning, with a substantial variation in the rates by different states. Social /environmental factors – such as regulation and control of outlet density, and measures to reduce the prevalence, frequency and intensity of binge drinking are reported as contributing to these variations and it is recommended that more regulation control could help reduce the level of deaths.    Further information
