European drug emergencies network

The EMCDDA reports on latest information from the European drug emergencies network. It shows that in Europe thousands of individuals present with drug-related acute toxicity requiring medical assistance; they are likely to be young adults and to involve heroin, cocaine and cannabis. A considerable burden on health services and related costs is highlighted. A significant proportion of presentations require critical care admission and there are some deaths. Emergency department are a unique setting for delivering brief interventions for both illicit drugs and alcohol, although an even balance between providing acute care and secondary advice is difficult to maintain given the emergency nature of the former.  The report can be downloaded from EMCDDA
