New Misuse of Drugs regulations

The new Misuse of Drugs Regulations, signed by Minister Catherine Byrne, TD on May 2nd, bring into effect 2016 amendments to Misuse of Drugs legislation, which require a higher standard of prescription for certain controlled drugs and changes to the essential criteria to be included on prescriptions for all controlled drugs. The main drugs affected are Benzodiazepines (such as diazepam) and ‘z-drug’ sleeping tablets (such as zopiclone and zolpidem). The legislation arose from concern that some of these prescribed drugs found their way onto illegal markets. The regulations affect prescriptions issued after May 4th.
